A Day in the Life of an Architecture Student

By Claudia Harrison

While many of you may know someone who is an Architecture student, it is highly likely that you hardly ever see them, if at all. This is as a result of them being confined to the four walls of the Centilivres Building. Varsity caught up with Nhlalala Mageza, a second year Architecture student, to find out how a day in her life looks and to see what advice she has to impart.

Full Name: Nhlalala Mageza

Year of study: 2nd year

What motivated you to want to study architecture?

I didn’t really like anything else and I really enjoyed drawing so I decided to take architecture.

How does a normal weekday go for you, from waking up in the morning until you go to bed at night?

My alarm goes off at 6am and I sabotage myself by snoozing the alarm like several times. I end up getting up at 7am. I get dressed and ready for the day. Then I walk up to Kopano for breakfast. That walk will humble you, because you’re walking up a hill. Then I walk down to the Jammie stop and I wait in line for the Jammie and hope it’s a South stop Jammie, so that it is closer to the Centilivres Building. I arrive into the building and I’m in a lecture from about 9am-11am. After the lecture my class and I head down to the studio where we are meant to be working on a tutorial during the time. At meridian we exit Centilivres for the first time. I usually head down to Sports Center for tannie’s chicken mayo sandwiches. Then I have another lecture from 2pm to 4pm. My class schedule ends with a tutorial from 4pm-6pm, but sometimes it ends at 5pm if they feeling generous. At 6pm I walk down to Kopano for dinner. I walk down instead of taking a Jammie down so that I can avoid walking up the hill. At 7pm I go down to my room and change into some comfortable clothing and head back to campus again to work on a project. I work from 8pm until the last residence loop Jammie. I prefer working at night because I focus better and procrastinate less. I arrive back at res around midnight, watch an episode of a series, then sleep, and repeat.

What advice to you have for first year Architecture students?

Start your assignments as soon as you get them and stay consistent when working on them in terms of the effort that you put in. Secondly, if you mess up on an assignment try and learn from it so that you don’t repeat your mistakes. Don’t struggle in silence; ask your peers, you actually learn more from them than the lecturers. Most importantly especially after receiving criticism don’t take it personally and stand by your design. Don’t allow the lecturers to design for you and change everything, but rather take their suggestions and use them in a way that will improve your design.
